Early Voting Volunteering
I got into D.C today around 3 and by 3:30 I was at my local recreation center, Turkey Thickett ready to volunteer and vote. My mother lost her mom recently, so I came back home to try and comfort her. She didn't want to sit and cry again today so she asked me if there was something positive we could do today. I suggested we go volunteer at a voting site. Me, my dad, and my mom headed over to our local recreation center and asked them what they needed. It was required that you sign up for volunteering weeks ago but, the people in charge knew our family well and tasked us with passing out water and snacks. Since my mom is a nurse, she checked on the elderly and offered them the drive-in voting option if they felt like they couldn't continue standing. I saw a lot of my friends that stayed home for college or decided not to go, and I was really happy to see them out doing their civic duty. We had to pick up my brother from the train station at 9 so around 7 I got in line and was able to vote in my first election. In high school I was deeply involved with voting rights in D.C and went as far as becoming a spokeswoman for a voting right's initiative for 16 year's old. When I was involved in that I noticed the history of low voter turnout east of the river in D.C because elected officials have done little for the impoverished people of color in those neighborhoods. So, hearing that this will be a historical year for voter turnout in D.C makes me feel very proud to call this my city.
